35 MANAGING ART COLLECTIONS: from ancient to contemporary TANZANIA Daniel Haruni Chilonzi Mr. Daniel Haruni Chilonzi, cultural professional, works as a Cultural Officer at the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports. In this role, he is actively involved in the promotion, preservation and development of cultural heritage. His work supports national efforts to safeguard tangible and intangible cultural assets while encouraging community participation in cultural activities. As a cultural officer, he contributes to the planning and implementation of cultural programs, festivals and outreach initiatives aiming at strengthening national identity and social cohesion. He works closely with artists, cultural institutions, local communities and other stakeholders to document cultural practice and promote creative expression. His responsibilities also include providing technical support on cultural policy implementation and raising public awareness about the importance of culture in sustainable development. With a strong commitment to cultural preservation, He continues to contribute with his knowledge and skills to the advancement of culture at both local and national levels. He is currently working with a cultural heritage collection that consists of both tangible and intangible materials. The collection includes traditional artifacts (such as tools, costumes, musical instruments, and artworks), archival documents, and oral histories. It spans different historical periods, from the pre-colonial era to the present. The materials are drawn from various geographical areas, reflecting the richness and diversity of local communities and their cultural practices.
